Motorist driving wrong way on 55 Freeway dies in head-on crash

A motorist was killed Saturday in a head-on collision after he drove the wrong way on the northbound Costa Mesa Freeway in Tustin, authorities said.

The woman suffered major injuries and had to be taken to a hospital; the man was trapped in his vehicle and had to be cut out, said Capt. Marc Stone of the Orange County Fire Authority.

Orange County Coroner’s Office officials identified the man as Victor Gomez Zarco, 26, of Long Beach. Gomez Zarco was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of the 55 at Santa Clara Avenue around 3 a.m. Saturday, the CHP said. Garza’s 2008 Nissan Altima collided head-on with a 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan.

Orange County firefighters responded, and Gomez Zarco was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Volkswagen, a 23-year-old La Palma woman, was cut from her vehicle and taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with major injuries.

Cause of the Costa Mesa Freeway Crash

The CHP said the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
