Coroner IDs Woodlander who died after CR-102, I-5 vehicle accident in Woodland
Yolo County’s Chief Deputy Coroner Robert LaBrash has identified the man who died in a single-car crash Friday night off of County Road 102 and Interstate 5.
Robert Dale Sunderland III, 25, of Woodland, died Friday night around 9:44 p.m. at the scene of the accident, LaBrash told The Democrat Saturday afternoon. Emergency workers had attempted to resuscitate Sunderland before he succumbed to his injuries.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, LaBrash said.
Two other passengers from Woodland suffered major injuries and the driver, who the California Highway Patrol says was under the influence of alcohol, sustained minor injuries.
LaBrash said he had no information on the conditions of the other passengers, who were sent to UC Davis Medical Center and Kaiser South.
The CHP had no news on the conditions of the other passengers as of 4:15 p.m. Saturday.
Officials have not released the names of any of the individuals involved in the incident other than Sunderland.
Witnesses alerted authorities of the accident around 9 p.m. and tried to provide assistance, the CHP said.
Due to the severity of the accident as reported by witnesses, two helicopters were immediately dispatched to the scene, along with two ambulances and emergency vehicles from the CHP, Woodland Fire Department, Woodland Police Department and Yolo County Sheriff’s Department.
Emergency officials were on scene within four minutes.
minutes. The first helicopter landed less than 15 minutes after that.
Officials quickly closed off CR-102 from the freeway to Gateway Plaza and set up a helicopter-landing zone on CR-102 in front of the former Chevron Service Station south of the overpass.
In addition to the driver being extricated from the car by firefighters and flown to UCD Medical Center, a 22-year-old Woodland man was also flown out for treatment. The second surviving Woodlander, a 21-year-old man, was taken by ambulance to Kaiser South.
Cause of the Yolo County Accident
According to initial reports from the CHP, the accident was caused when a 22-year-old Sacramento man lost control of his 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse while going southbound on I-5 on the CR-102 off-ramp. The car then traveled onto the shoulder and overturned a number of times before coming to rest on its roof. The unidentified driver was flown by helicopter to UCD Medical Center for treatment. He was later arrested for felony driving under the influence and felony manslaughter.
Car Accident Wrongful Death Liability
The term “wrongful death” is defined as the death of an individual as a result of the negligence, carelessness, intentional act of another individual, corporation, company or entity. Filing a proper wrongful death claim is extremely difficult and complex for families because they are not only dealing with their grief over the death of a beloved family member, but also complex issues of compensation as well. Wrongful death claims are usually sought after by relatives, siblings, or members of the decedent’s estate who have lost a considerable amount of money as well as loss of support and grief due to the wrongful death of the decedent.
In most states, if the death of a relative or spouse was caused by the wrongful act of another, surviving family members can file a wrongful death lawsuit against the negligent party or parties. In order to file a wrongful death claim, you must be able to prove that you will experience severe future emotional and financial hardship because of the loss of the death of a relative, family member or spouse
