CHP Officer Struck By Big Rig
A California Highway Patrol officer was struck by a big rig while conduct a traffic stop, officials said. At about 11 p.m. Thursday, a 2002 Freightliner tractor-trailer combination driven by Manuel Ancelmo of Madera, was traveling eastbound on State Route 58 near Mojave.
Officials said Ancelmo was traveling in the right lane when he allowed his vehicle to drive upon the right shoulder. His vehicle then hit a CHP Ford Crown Victoria car that was parked with the officer inside, officials said.
The officer was conducting an enforcement stop on a vehicle, officials said.
The tractor-trailer continued and hit with the vehicle the officer had stopped for a traffic violation.
The second collision caused minor injuries to the five occupants of the stopped Chevrolet Uplander, officials said.
The CHP officer was taken to a local hospital and later released. Alcohol was not a factor in this collision.
The California Highway Patrol reminds motorists to move over a lane when they see an emergency vehicle stopped on the shoulder of the road.
Unfortunately, several similar accidents have killed or severely wounded road workers and emergency personnel.
The people in the Uplander are residents of Fresno.
