Girl seriously hurt in hit-and-run improving
SANTA ANA – A 13-year-old girl injured by a hit-and-run driver while riding her bicycle remained in critical condition Wednesday but is expected to recover, police said.
Peter Pham said his daughter, Teresa, was wearing a helmet while riding her bike to her cousin’s house to do homework when she was struck.
“She is doing better,” Pham said Wednesday morning while on his way to visit his daughter at the hospital. Teresa suffered broken bones and cuts to her face, he said.
Teresa was riding through a crosswalk at the intersection of West Warner Avenue and South Greenville Street when she was struck by an unidentified vehicle about 7 p.m. Monday, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
The driver fled before police arrived.
“Someone left her lying in the roadway with no regard for her safety or her condition,” Bertagna said.
In addition to trying to identify the driver, police are also trying to find a man who rendered first aid to Teresa.
“We believe he is a potential witness to who hit her and would like to talk to him,” Bertagna said, adding that based on the damage to the bike and debris left behind, Teresa was struck by a small car – not an SUV or a truck.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the vehicle that left the scene to call Santa Ana traffic detectives at 714-245-8214.
