405 North Closed At Artesia After Fatal Construction Worker Crash
Two alleged drunken drivers hit each other and then plowed into a construction crew, killing two road workers, on the 405 (San Diego) Freeway in the South Bay early Sunday morning.
The workers were identified as Ramon Lopez, 56, of Chino Hills and Ricardo Zamora, 58, of Winchester in Riverside County, said Coroner’s Lt. Cheryl MacWillie.
Paramedics rushed a third worker to Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries, said California Highway Patrol Officer Dion Conley. The crash was reported to the CHP at 3:35 a.m.
The two workers were employed by a contracting firm under Caltrans supervision, and their bodies were still at the scene at mid-morning.
CHP officers said a blue Ford Explorer driven by Yocio Jonathan Gomez, 33, of Norwalk, smashed into the rear of a black Lexus RX-350 SUV driven by Stephan Christopher Caserta, 43, of Playa Vista, Conley said.
“As it turns out, one of the motorists (Caserta) was slowing down as he saw the construction site. He was rear-ended by the other motorist, which caused them both to drive into the construction zone,” said CHP Officer Ed Jacobs.
The sport utility vehicle spun out control, forcing him to strike the three workers. Gomez’s car overturned on its roof.
Paramedics rushed both drivers to hospitals, where both were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. “And there’s a lot of charges we can affix to that (charge),’ Conley said.
The medical conditions of Gomez and Caserta were not immediately known.
The northbound 405 remained closed at the South Bay Curve until about 2 p.m. as the CHP Major Accident Investigation Team surveyed the wrecks. The incomplete repaving job was also completed, CHP officers at the scene said.
“At the time of the closure the number one and the HOV lanes were the only lanes open’ on the northbound 405 near the Artesia Boulevard off ramp,” Conley said.

Beaumont: Driver of pickup who slammed into big rig identified
Authorities today identified a 65-year-old man who was killed when his pickup truck slammed into the back of a big rig on Interstate 10 in Beaumont.
Edward Dodson III of Yucaipa died at the scene of the crash, which occurred around 9:30 Tuesday night on the eastbound 10, near Beaumont Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Darren Meyer.
He said Dodson apparently failed to see that a semi tractor-trailer was slowing to a stop ahead of him for road construction and plowed into the rear of the rig.
The victim’s 1992 Toyota pickup crumpled on impact, Meyer said.
The driver of the big rig was uninjured.
Cause of the Beaumont Accident
Officers are still Investigating the reasons behind deadly I-10 crash in Beaumont.
Highway and road construction zones make for some of the most dangerous road conditions in California. It seems that major highways and thoroughfares are nearly under construction leaving drivers to deal with improperly marked roads, obstacles and other hazardous conditions. Hundreds of drivers and passenger cars, semi trailer trucks and motorcycles are injured or killed every year in construction zone accidents that could have been prevented.
Dangerous Roadway Conditions
In a construction zone accident, there may be more than one party liable for compensating you for your serious injuries . Road maintenance crews, highway engineers, construction zone traffic controllers and other drivers are often held legally accountable for damages.
Roadway defect claims are complex injury claims and many attorneys are hesitant to handle these cases because of their level of difficulty. An experienced auto accident attorney who has successfully won roadway design and defect cases will know what experts to consult with to determine if the condition of the roadway was actually a factor in the accident.
Demand accountability from those responsible for the dangerous conditions of the construction site accidents. Many times the insurance companies will play “hardball” if you try to settle the case yourself or you have employed a lawyer who does not have the litigation experience to handle such a complex case. We at the Law Offices of Gary A Kessler have twenty years of litigation experience and know how to handle the insurance companies to your advantage. We are prepared to front all costs required for the necessary investigation and expert witnesses needed to prepare your case for trial.
