Big Rig Accidents

Fatal Accident on 18 near Big Bear

A stretch of Highway 18 near Baldwin Lake has reopened after being closed for more than six hours due to a collision earlier today between a big rig trailer and an SUV that killed a Big Bear City woman and injured her 16-year-old passenger.

The 37-year-old woman, Lili De Coronado, was at the wheel of a 2006 Kia Sorrento traveling east on Highway 18 just east of Paradise Way about 11 a.m., said Officer Benjamin Baker, spokesman for the Arrowhead area office of the Highway Patrol, in a news release.

At the same time, Fred Riley, 51, of Menifee, was traveling west on 18 in a Peterbilt dump truck pulling a dump trailer, Baker said. As he entered a leftward curve in the road, Riley’s truck ran up on the right shoulder of the roadway, the trailer colliding with the mountainside.

The collision separated the gravel box from the trailer’s frame, the box coming to rest in the opposing lane, Baker said. The trailer frame bounced into the opposing lane and slammed into the Kia.

The Kia’s driver was taken to Bear Valley Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Baker said. The 16-year-old girl was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center with unspecified injuries. Her condition was not being made public.

The collision closed the highway between Paradise Way and Baldwin Lake Road for most of the day, while investigators tried to piece together what happened and crews worked to remove about 12 tons of cinders dumped on the road when the trailer was wrecked. It reopened about 5:45 p.m.

CHP continues to investigate the accident.

Fiery Big Rig Crash Creates Traffic Nightmare on 10 Freeway

MONTCLAIR, Calif. (KTLA) — A fiery crash involving a big rig created a traffic nightmare on the 10 Freeway in Montclair early Wednesday morning.

The accident happened around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday on the westbound 10 at Monte Vista.

The diver of a Mercedes lost control for unknown reasons and hit a big rig, according to the CHP.

The big rig driver swerved to the left and struck a Nissan.

Both the Nissan and the semi then crashed into the center divider.

One of the rig’s diesel tanks landed in the eastbound lanes and ruptured.

That’s when the semi caught fire. It took over an hour to extinguish the flames.

The driver of the semi truck was airlifted to County USC Medical Center.

The driver of one of the vehicles had to be extricated with the jaws of life. That person was airlifted to Loma Linda hospital.

Their injuries were non-life threatening, according to the CHP.

Crews used cranes to upright the big rig, which was then towed away on a flat bed truck.

Hazmat personnel were also on scene to clean-up fuel spilled from the semi.

Crews will return later to repair the center divider, the CHP said.

Both the westbound and eastbound lanes were reopened by 6:30 a.m., but traffic remained slow.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Man crushed between wall and trash bin in La Jolla alley

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A man in his 70s or 80s was found dead, pinned between a commercial trash bin and a wall in La Jolla Wednesday. An employee at Jonathan’s Market in the 7600 block of Fay Avenue found the body about 7 a.m., according to San Diego police. His name was not immediately available. Police looked at video from the store and saw images of a tractor-trailer backing into the alley, leading them to believe the truck hit the garbage bin and pushed it into the man, San Diego police spokeswoman Lt. Andra Brown said. It isn’t clear if the driver knew what he had done. Police said they believe the driver was trying to make a delivery to Jonathan’s, unaware that the receiving dock had closed hours earlier. Authorities have not released his name, but some employees at Jonathan’s told police they recognized the victim as someone who lived nearby, police Sgt. Jim Reschke said.

Victim Identified in Big Rig Crash near Thermal

On Monday, the Riverside County coroner identified the victim of a big rig-car collision near Thermal over the weekend as a Mecca man.

Victor Elizarraraz, 20, was the driver of the sedan that was struck by a big rig on state Route 86 near Avenue 62 around 11:25 p.m. Saturday, the coroner said.

Elizarraraz was ejected from the car and thrown about 148 feet to the dirt shoulder.

The person sitting in the passenger seat of the sedan was also killed. That person, who was not ejected during the crash, has not yet been identified.

The tractor-trailer burst into flames, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Cause of the State Route 86 Accident

MADERA COUNTY,Calif.(KFSN) — Two people are recovering in the hospital after a big rig accident inMaderaCounty.

The crash happened on Highway 41 near Avenue 14 early Monday morning.

The California Highway Patrol says a big rig going northbound on Highway 41 tried to make a u-turn when the driver missed his exit.

The CHP says the big rig pulled out in front of on-coming traffic and the driver of a van wasn’t able to stop in time.

The two people inside the van were taken to the hospital. Their conditions have not been released.

The accident temporarily blocked a portion on Highway 41, but all lanes were back open by midday.

Santa Rosa Man Killed in Highway 128 Tanker Crash

Eighteen hours after a fatal collision closed Highway 128, the road between Cloverdale and Boonville has been opened to one-way traffic.

The limited access is expected to remain in place at least three days and could be up to two weeks, according to highway officials.

A 23-year-old Santa Rosa man driving a 2005 Toyota Camry was killed when a westbound tanker truck filled with a load of gasoline went out of control and crossed into oncoming traffic at about 8 p.m. About 4,000 gallons of fuel spilled onto the road.

The identity of the man has not be released pending notification of his family. An autopsy is scheduled today.

Terry Wood, 56, of Santa Rosa was driving a 2007 Peterbilt truck filled with gas when he lost control and the trailer overturned, said CHP spokesman Randy England.

The truck is owned by Redwood Transportation of Santa Rosa, according to CHP.

The trailer collided with the Camry which was traveling east on Highway 128.

Hazmat and environmental health officials responded to the scene and Wednesday morning officials were still trying to determine the extent of the damage to the roadway, England said.

Alternate routes include Highway 253 near Boonville and Mountain House Road at Hopland.

Cause of the Sonoma County Truck Accident

The cause of the August 2nd crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. However, based on the limited information provided by the Press-Democrat, the driver of the Toyota Camry likely could have done nothing to prevent this horrific collision.

Multi-vehicle crash on I-90 in Bellevue, Washington causing huge backup

BELLEVUE, Wash. – A collision involving a semi-truck, a logging truck and 13 other vehicles are blocking lanes of westbound Interstate 90 and left a young girl in critical condition.

Three lanes were closed between 148th Avenue SE and the exit to I-405 as of 10 a.m.

The Washington State Patrol said the semi-truck came upon regular morning congestion around 7:45 a.m. and could not stop in time. The logging truck fishtailed in an effort to avoid the collision. That led to a chain reaction involving other vehicles.

At least seven people were taken to the hospital, including a 9-year-old girl in critical condition.

Initial reports were that the logging truck lost its load, but that was not the case. However, there are reports the truck’s rear axle was damaged.

Two lanes, including the HOV lane, are getting through, but the backup as of 10 a.m. was approximately six miles. General traffic is being allowed to use the HOV lane. WSDOT has no estimate on when the scene will be cleared.

Three women killed in San Dimas freeway crash

SAN DIMAS – Three Los Angeles women died following a crash on the South 57 Freeway on Monday after the truck they were in caught fire, California Highway Patrol officials said.The women, whose ages ranged from 47 to 62, were in a Nissan pickup truck traveling slowly because of an apparent flat tire when a Wal-Mart tractor-trailer rear-ended them, bending the frame of the pickup and causing the gas tank to explode, said CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez.

“The gas tank erupted and that is what ignited the pickup,” Jimenez said.

Two of the women in the truck were trapped in the backseat of the two-door vehicle, as was the woman in the front passenger seat, Jimenez said.

The driver, a man, was able to escape unharmed, he said.

The three women and the driver are believed to be related, Jimenez said.

Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department officials said identification of the women will take days as they wait on dental records.

A Sig Alert was issued at 3:05 a.m. on Monday following the collision, closing all 57 Freeway lanes and portions of the east and west bound lanes of the 210 Freeway to the 57 transition roads.

The lanes were cleared at 7:12 a.m.

The collision happened as the Nissan truck was traveling in the right lane next to the slow lane at about 5 mph due to an apparent flat tire, Jimenez said.

The tractor-trailer was traveling at 55 mph, Jimenez said.

The 25-year-old

driver of the tractor-trailer was also unharmed.Both drivers were released from the scene without any citation or arrest, Jimenez said.

There wasn’t a single fatal traffic collision on the 57 Freeway between the 210 and the 60 Freeways between January 2009 and March 2010, according to the most recent data available from the California Highway Patrol.

During the same time period, there were 122 injury collisions, 160 injuries and a total of 351 reported collisions.

The south 57 Freeway after the 210 interchange averages 145,000 daily vehicles, almost 8 percent of which are trucks, according to 2009 state data.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) there were 6.3 million traffic accidents reported by law enforcement last year, in which over 41,000 people were killed and over 3.2 million people sustained injuries.  The most common causes of tractor-trailer rig and trucking accidents are due to the following:

  • Drunk driving
  • Driving while drowsy
  • Reckless driving
  • Speeding
  • Driver fatigue
  • Truck overturns
  • Backing up
  • Brake failure
  • Transporting heavy equipment with trailers
  • Overloaded trucks and/or trailers
  • Loads that shift weight
  • Semi truck jacknife in traffic
  • Poor and dangerouse road conditions
  • Cell phone misuse
  • Mechanical failure
  • DUI

Severe injuries and fatalities occur in a truck (big rig) accident.  Blunt head trauma, spinal cord injuries and amputations are common injuries associated when trucks carrying heavy loads collide into other cars.  The Law Offices of Gary A Kessler represents trucking victims throughout California killed or seriously injured in wrecks caused by truck driver negligence.  Our office takes immediate action, conducting our own investigation, consulting with nationally known accident reconstructionists, interviewing eyewitnesses and obtaining the truck driving records.

Due to the fact that the trucking industry is regulated by state and federal law, these trucking firms are required to follow procedures to ensure the safety of others.  It is important that you hire experienced trucking accident lawyer Gary A Kessler who has handled personal injury cases involving truck accidents for twenty years and has the comprehensive knowledge of the trucking industry.

At the Law Offices of Gary A Kessler we obtain all evidence from a number of vital sources, including the following:

  • Review truck driver’s log book to see if sleep deprivation or overtime was a factor in the accident
  • Review the truck’s maintenance records to determine if mechanical failure or design defect of the truck was a factor
  • Verify if reflector(s) and lighting on the truck were in compliance with state and federal laws
  • Consult trucking company as well as DMV (nationwide records when applicable) pertaining to truck driver’s drug and alcohol tests
  • Obtain on board computer of the truck to determine speed, braking and sleeping
  • Consult numerous accident reconstructionists and trucking experts
  • Obtain all law enforcement agency reports (i.e., CHP, Police Department, Sheriff’s Department, MAIT Team, etc.)

Law Offices of Gary A Kessler provides sophisticated and innovative legal strategies for almost any type of fatality, wrongful death and/or serious injuries.  We not only handle wrongful death and serious injuries but also traumatic brain injuries.  Our office has undertaken difficult to next to impossible cases and prevailed, convincing the skeptical insurance companies of the merits of our client’s viable claims.  From stolen vehicles, to tractor trailer rigs which have lost their loads, to professional truck drivers under the influence who have fallen asleep behind the wheel, to backing up over a Plaintiff wife and killing her, our office has represented hundreds of clients in truly tragic circumstances.  Many times the official police report does not outline the true circumstances of what has occured.  Our office many times has discovered witnesses which law enforcement neglected to interview and have turned the case around in favor of our clients.

Too many lawyers rush to simplistic results only looking at the barebones insurance policy of the Defendant truck driver.  The Law Offices of Gary A Kessler will consult with you about all of the potential defendants (i.e., truck driver, the contracting party for the load being delivered, the party who loaded the truck, owner of the trucking firm,etc.), whether the roadway created “dangerous conditions” for the driver involved, were there steering and/or brake failure, did the restraint system operate free of defect, did the fuel tank fire cause the majority of injuries, etc..

If you or a loved one is involved in a Tractor Trailer Rig (Big Truck) accident:

  • Insist that a report is filed by the Police Department, California Highway Patrol, or Sheriff’s Department;
  • Obtain essential information (i.e., name, address, insurance information, vehicle license number and driver license number of any and all persons involved in the accident);
  • Photograph the accident scene (if possible) as well as all visible injuries;
  • Shut up!  Talk to no one about the accident or your injuries other than your attorney or doctor, never to an insurance adjuster or insurance investigator.  Do not volunteer a statement to any insurance company;
  • Sign absolutely nothing without consulting a lawyer;
  • Seek medical attention immediately and keep a diary of your level of pain;
  • Keep all records for all medical expenses and/or funeral bills and wage loss records;
  • Contact the Law Offices of Gary A Kessler an experienced law firm immediately to protect your rights and preserve the evidence!
