Man killed in Fremont crash involving big rig

FREMONT — A man died when a big rig and a cement truck collided Friday morning in the city’s Warm Springs district, police said.

The fatal crash occurred about 8:30 a.m. in the 47100 block of Kato Road, near where West Warren Avenue meets Interstate 880, police said. The cement truck was heading north when it collided with the southbound big rig, which was carrying a boom crane.

The cement truck driver, identified only as a 39-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene with major head injuries. The 51-year-old driver of the 18-wheel truck suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital, police said.

Drugs and alcohol don’t appear to be factors in the collision, police said.

Authorities closed Kato Road between Benicia and Auburn streets for several hours while they investigated what caused the accident.

Traffic Fatality in North Long Beach

Yesterday morning at approximately 9:14am, officers from the Long Beach Police Department were dispatched to the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, where a traffic collision occurred that resulted in the death of an adult female.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a tractor-trailer truck was traveling westbound on Pacific Coast Highway, when a Chevy Blazer traveling eastbound attempted to turn northbound onto Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue. The truck struck the Blazer, and the driver and front seat passenger, who were not wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, were both ejected onto the roadway. The truck then struck the ejected passenger, who was determined to be deceased at the scene. The driver and a second passenger, who was in the rear seat, sustained what appeared to be minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital.

The decedent has been identified as Sonia Esperanza Rodriguez, a 54-year-old Long Beach resident. The 48-year-old driver of the Blazer and 21-year-old passenger are both male residents of Long Beach.

The driver of the truck, a 29-year-old resident of Valencia, was questioned and released at the scene. The investigation is ongoing and charges may be pending against the drivers of both vehicles involved.

MOJAVE DESERT: Big-rig wreck kills motorist near Baker

A big-rig rear-ended a car yesterday along Interstate 15 deep in the Mojave Desert killing a 59-year-old Las Vegas woman who was driving the 2012 Chevy Impala, according to San Bernardino County coroner’s officials and California Highway Patrol officers.

Juanita Mullin died at the scene of the 10:46 a.m. wreck Monday along the freeway’s northbound lanes about four miles north of Baker.

“For unknown reasons, (Mullin) was either stopped or traveling extremely slow … with the vehicle’s emergency flashers activated,” CHP officers said in a written statement.

A 67-year-old trucker driving a 2008 International momentarily diverted his attention by looking inside his cab and slammed into the car, causing the Impala to overturn and the big-rig to run off the freeway and up an embankment, according to the statement.

Seguin students injured after school bus crash with big rig, PT Cruiser

SEGUIN — Bits of burnt homework could be seen from the open emergency door, left ajar after a freshman football player helped fellow students off his burning school bus.

“At this time, we have zero fatalities. We are very blessed when it comes to that,” said State Trooper Jason Reyes.

Bus #2 was headed to Barnes Middle School and Seguin High School with 9 children on board, when the unexpected happened along Hwy 123: troopers say a PT Cruiser had moved to the shoulder to allow an 18-wheeler to pass.

It was a courtesy that officers say became complicated.

Trooper Reyes added, “It was at that time that the PT Cruiser was clipped. Once it was clipped, it forced it into the northbound lane of traffic, striking the school bus head on.”

That set-off a chain reaction and a fire, which quickly spread to the four vehicles, charring the twisted mass as children and drivers scurried for safety. All 13-people would be injured, but survived.

Firefighters found the cab of the bus separated from its wheels and upside down. School officials said the bus was 3-weeks old with a modern design that allowed the chassis to detach in a collision, minimizing the impact on passengers.

Seguin ISD spokesperson Sean Hoffmann said, “The fact that the body of the bus isn’t connected to the frame probably saved lives today.”

Hoffman said the bus was unusually unoccupied. Many of the high school seniors had the day off, because students in schools statewide are taking the STARR exams. Hoffmann said the injured students will have to make-up that test at a later date.

The Texas Department of Public Safety’s accident reconstruction team is combing through the wreckage, because troopers say the accident had all the right ingredients of a mass-casualty event.

But, it also had the right people responding at the right time.

“The true heroes in this were some workers on their way to work from Halliburton. From what I was told they helped remove a lot of students from the bus and direct traffic. We got to give praise to those guys,” said Reyes.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was flown to University Hospital in critical condition. The school bus driver and one student are at San Antonio area hospitals. The other victims received treatment at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center in Seguin.

GRMC spokesperson Kelsey Stewart said the hospital brought in extra staff to help direct families and coordinate care for the victims.

Motorcyclist Run Over By Big Rig

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) — All lanes of Business 80 have reopened after a deadly crash Thursday morning that closed the eastbound side of the highway for more than four hours.

A man on a motorcycle lost control and crashed onto the concrete just before 5 a.m. near Arden Way — a wreck that might have been weather-related, the California Highway Patrol said.

A big rig driver behind him couldn’t stop in time to avoid the collision, and ended up running the man over, according to the CHP. The motorcyclist was hit by a second vehicle and died instantly at the crash scene, police said.

Traffic was backed up for about two miles in the area after the accident, but cars were soon after re-routed off the freeway to avoid the scene entirely.

The big rig driver said the air brakes on his truck went out, and he couldn’t avoid hitting the man. At first, he didn’t even realize it was a person who he had struck, police said.

Big-rig crash claims life of Marina man

A 47-year-old Marina man died in a weekend crash with a semi-truck-trailer on Highway 101 south of Chualar, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.

The name of the victim was not released pending notification of next of kin, the CHP said.

The victim was driving south about 10 a.m. Sunday in a Buick Electra when a truck-trailer combination behind him collided with the car and caused it to go out of control and overturn, the CHP said.

The car didn’t have seatbelts, and the victim was pinned underneath the vehicle, the CHP said.

The accident occurred about two miles south of Chualar in the right-hand lane.

The CHP said the truck driver, Jose Ortiz, 42, of Mountain View failed to see the slow-moving car for an unknown reason.

Drugs or alcohol did not appear to be involved, the CHP said. The collision remains under investigation.

The truck, owned by AAVI Transport of Fresno, was hauling a load of produce from Castroville, the CHP said. The truck driver wasn’t hurt.

Cause of the the big-rig crash

According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of the Buick was traveling with a line of classic cars on the slow lane of Southbound Highway 101. It was followed by a  motor home and a big-rig truck.

The motor home passed the Buick, but the big-rig driver did not notice the Electra’s slower speed and hit it from behind.

The impact caused the Electra to overturn on the center divide, ejecting and killing the driver.

One dead, two injured in crash on Highway 119

One man was killed when a pickup crashed into a big rig on Highway 119 at Tupman Road  near Taft, Ca.  just after midnight Saturday, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The  man who died in the midnight crash was a passenger in the pickup.
The Kern County Coroner has identified the man killed in a crash on Highway 119 at Tupman Road early Saturday as Rudy Pineda, 33, of Rialto.
The pickup driver and driver of the truck were both hospitalized.
The CHP said in a news release that  Jason S. Porschakin, 34, of Bude, Miss., was  northbound on Highway 119 approaching Tupman Road when his Dodge pickup drifted into the southbound lanes, then onto the shoulder and slammed into the passenger side of a  Kenworth tractor pulling a tanker that was stopped on Tupman Road at Highway 119 facing south.
The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
Porschakin suffered major injuries.
The tanker driver, Williams D. Galvan, 29, of Bakersfield, suffered minor injuries.
Porschakin and Galvan were taken to Kern Medical Center for treatment.

Cause of the Kern County Crash

As a passenger, the deceased likely could have done nothing to prevent this fatal  collision that ultimately took his life. The California Highway Patrol  will surely look at the speed of the vehicle, witness reports, and other factors to determine what occurred and who was responsible. Collisions such as this one can have countless causes, including unsafe passing maneuvers, swerving to avoid an object in the road, falling asleep at the wheel, driving under the influence, or driver distraction.CHP officials have released no information about the circumstances of the crash.

Converted bus rolls over in I-5 crash, injuring 9

A truck driver reaching for beef jerky hit a converted school bus with 10 people inside, causing the bus to roll over Tuesday on Interstate 5.

Nine people in the 1987 International Blue Bird bus were hurt. Three with moderate injuries were taken by ambulance to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield.

The 39-year-old driver of the 2008 Kenworth truck, a resident of Lakewood, Fla., was uninjured and not arrested.

The crash occurred about 6 a.m. in western Kern County on I-5 just south of the Kings County line.

According to the CHP, the driver of the northbound truck “was inattentive to his driving by reaching for a pack of beef jerky,” causing the truck to hit the rear of the bus, which slid into the dirt median and overturned, the CHP said.

The bus driver, a 23-year-old man from Phoenix, sustained minor injuries. The passengers, ages 22 to 46, are from Arizona, Texas and California.

Cause of the Bakersfield Big-Rig Accident on I-5

Big Rig Crash Causes Chain Reaction

Three people were hurt and four vehicles are damaged after a big rig driver lost control of his truck early Wednesday morning and caused a chain reaction on Interstate 5 near Pocket Road, a California Highway Patrol sergeant said.

The big rig driver told officers that he hit a bump in the road and began to spin out of control in the southbound lane of the highway, CHP Sgt. Bill Languemi said.

The wreck, which happened just after 3:20 a.m., was cleared by about 6 a.m.

It was unclear whether the “bump in the road” described by the driver was a patch of water that caused the rig to hydroplane. It wound up sitting across a center divider wall.

It appeared that the rig struck a Honda Accord, which was almost completely flattened. The driver of the Accord was taken to a hospital with critical injuries, Languemi said.

The crash wound up causing two other vehicles — another big rig and another passenger car — to crash, Languemi said. Two other drivers were hurt but suffered only minor injuries, officers said.

Cause of the Sacramento Big -Rig Crash

Based on the limited information provided by news reports it is unclear what caused the collision . Investigators are still trying to piece together how the accident happened. What is clear, is that the accident was the fault of the big-rig driver.
