The traffic accident was reported in the 100 block of North Euclid Street just after 6:15 p.m., Santa Ana police Sgt. Richard Gatto said.

The bicyclist, who police have not identified, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange in critical condition, Gatto said, and was undergoing surgery late Sunday night.

The cause of the traffic accident is under investigation. It wasn’t immediately clear if the bicyclist was in the street or in a crosswalk at the time of the collision.

Bicyclist injured in College Area accident

SAN DIEGO — A 23-year-old woman was injured Tuesday evening when her bicycle was struck by a vehicle in the College Area, police said.

The woman was riding south on College Avenue, near Cresita Drive, about 5:30 p.m. when she was struck by a Hyundai sport-utility vehicle driven by a 55-year-old man, said San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros.

The bicyclist was in the slow lane when the driver attempted to pass her. There was not enough room as a vehicle was in the other lane, and the SUV clipped the bicycle, Delimitros said.

Disneyland employee killed while bicycling home

ANAHEIM – A vehicle fatally struck a woman, identified as a Disneyland employee, while she was riding her bicycle home from work early Thursday morning.

Thursday morning, Disneyland officials released a statement about the fatal collision.

“I join with all of our cast members as we mourn the loss of one of our own,” said George A. Kalogridis, president of the Disneyland Resort.

“Our thoughts are with her family, friends and co-workers after this tragic accident.”

Quail Valley student killed in bicycle crash

OAK HILLS • A 12-year-old student from Quail Valley Middle School was killed when he was hit by a vehicle as he was riding his bike with friends over the weekend.

Zachariah Houck of Victorville died Saturday evening when he reportedly rode through a stop sign and was struck by a Lincoln Navigator, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Joaquin Zubieta.

“We’re all numb,” Sarah Houck-Garcia, Houck’s aunt, said Monday. “It’s been tragic for the entire family. He was just a big love bug.”

Houck and several friends were riding their bikes south on Joshua Road near Mesquite Road in Oak Hills a little before 7 p.m., Zubieta said.

“The Lincoln Navigator is traveling west on Mesquite, (Houck) doesn’t stop at the stop sign, the driver tries to avoid him by swerving to the right but couldn’t keep from hitting him,” Zubieta stated.

Houck was knocked off his bicycle and was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. It was unclear if the boy was wearing a helmet or any other protective gear.

The driver of the Navigator was not arrested.

Students and faculty members at Quail Valley were saddened to learn the news Monday, circulating a flyer around the campus showing the 12-year-old smiling.

“He just started seventh grade on Thursday and my brother had to go turn in his (school) books today,” Houck-Garcia said.

CHP authorities remind people that bicyclists must also follow the rules of the road.

“(Bicyclists) need to remember that traffic laws apply to both bicyclists as well as motorists,” Zubieta said. That includes having a light at night and always having reflectors.

Quail Valley is collecting donations for Houck’s family at the front office including gift cards, money or letters and cards of encouragement, according to Principal Dennis Zimmerman. Anyone wishing to make a donation to Houck’s family can visit the school at 10058 Arrowhead Road in Phelan or make out a check in the name of Zachariah Harrison Houck II and take it to a Wells Fargo branch.

“He was a wonderful boy,” Houck-Garcia said, recalling her nephew. “He was very creative and crafty. He always made birthday cards. He didn’t want to buy one. He would put a picture of you and him on it and made them personal.”

Bicycle Accident Personal Injury Liability

The CHP will surely look at speed and other factors to determine why this accident occurred, and whether the driver of the pickup truck could have done anything to avoid the collision. While this accident remains under investigation, the parents of the young boy injured in this collision would be well-advised to speak with an experienced and knowledgeable bicycle accident lawyer. An attorney who understands the unique legal issues of car vs. bicycle accidents can review the CHP report and determine who is responsible for this collision. Man arrested for crash that killed teen bicyclist in Clackamas

CLACKAMAS, Ore. — A teen bicyclist was killed in a hit and run crash early Saturday morning in Clackamas, and the driver turned himself in hours later, police said.

Michael Vu, 18, of Clackamas, was headed home just after 1 a.m. when he was struck by a pickup truck on the shoulder of Mather Road, according to Sgt. James Rhodes.

Neighbor Lisa Bartlette called 9-1-1 after hearing the crash and reported a man was lying in the roadway.

Vu was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It looks like the bicycle rider went up into the windshield of the vehicle and was carried a short distance  before he came off onto the roadway but then the bike stayed with the vehicle for quite a distance,” investigator Tim Bailey said.

The suspect vehicle left before police arrived.

“Regardless of whether the person was intoxicated right is right and you stop,” Bartlette said. “And it sounds like he hit the curb maybe and he was out of control before he hit the boy.”

Sgt. Rhodes said 28-year-old Artyom Pavlenko (pictured, left), of Clackamas, turned himself in to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office just before noon and admitted his involvement in the crash.

He was jailed on charges of manslaughter and felony hit-and-run. Investigators applied for a search warrant to seize the car.

A family spokesperson said Vu had just graduated Clackamas High School and was the full-time caregiver for his father, who suffered a traumatic brain injury one year ago.

Man arraigned in hit-and-run death of Santa Cruz bicyclist

SANTA CRUZ — A Santa Cruz man was booked into County Jail Friday on hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter charges nine days after a bicyclist was struck and killed on Empire Grade Road.

The body of Zachary Parke, 25, of Santa Cruz was found beside the road; he had been at a friend’s home on the UC Santa Cruz campus.

California Highway Patrol officers Sarah Jackson and Jim Crouch tracked down the maroon Nissan reportedly seen that night and then secured an arrest warrant for Elliott Sterling Dess, 21, about 8 a.m. today.

Dess, who works at a parts warehouse, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, Jackson said. His bail was set by Judge Paul Marigonda at $100,000, she said.

CHP investigators contacted Dess through his attorney, whom Jackson declined to name.

Dess came to the Aptos CHP office and was arrested there, she said.

He was “very quiet,” Jackson said. Dess is accused of striking Parke and of not stopping after the fatal crash.

The maroon 1998 Nissan Sentra Dess was driving is registered to a family member, Jackson said.

She would only say that a combination of evidence left at the scene and tips from callers broke the case, and that the CHP has been working with the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office.

Any charges or enhancements to the charges — including any allegation of the level of injury on a hit-and-run charge — would come from

what the District Attorney’s Office files in a criminal complaint.

“I can’t say anymore,” she said. “The case has not been adjudicated and I would hate to compromise their case.”

Jackson said she left a message for Parke’s mother, April Parke, this morning, to notify her of the arrest.

“We’ve been working on it steadily since we received the call, Jackson said. “It’s always good to resolve a case like this, that’s our job, although making an arrest doesn’t necessarily make anyone feel any better.”

Dess remained in County Jail early this afternoon.

Hit-and-run Driver Kills Elderly Bicyclist in Canoga Park

Los Angeles police are searching for the hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a 71-year-old bicyclist in Canoga Park.

Witnesses say the driver fled the scene.

Hit and Run Felony – When Hit and Run results in bodily injury or death, a felony will be charged. How soon after I am injured do I have to file a lawsuit?

Every state has certain time limits called “statutes of limitations,” which govern the amount of time you have to file a personal injury lawsuit. In some states, you may have as little as one year to file a lawsuit arising out of an automobile accident. If you miss the deadline for filing your case, your claims can be dismissed. Consequently, it is important to talk with a lawyer as soon as you receive or discover an injury.

What damages are recoverable in pedestrian accident cases?

The injured party may recover damages for past and future medical expenses, past and future wage loss, past and future pain and suffering. If the defendant’s conduct is extreme, punitive damages may be awarded. If the pedestrian dies, his or her survivors are entitled to recover full compensation for their economic losses that result from the pedestrian’s death, as well as damages which stem from the loss of society care and comfort of the decedent.

Do I need to retain an attorney?

It is almost always a good idea to retain an attorney in a pedestrian accident case because there usually will be some questions related to fault and comparative negligence. Expert witnesses may need to be retained to reconstruct the accident factors, and help determine responsibility for the accident. The family members of the victim would be well advised to contact California Wrongful Death Attorney Gary A.
