Redwood City girl on bike killed by truck
A pickup truck hit and killed a 14-year-old girl Monday morning as she rode her bike to school in what officials said appears to be a horrible accident.
The girl, whose name was not released, was struck around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Alameda de las Pulgas, Redwood City police Sgt. Sean Hart said. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The driver, who police declined to identify, was not arrested and is not suspected of any wrong doing at present. The driver didn’t appear to be under the influence of alcohol and police haven’t identified any mechanical problems with the truck. It may have just been a tragic accident, said Hart, who added the crash remains under investigation.
The girl and the driver were headed east on Jefferson when they both made a right-hand turn onto southbound Alameda de las Pulgas, Hart said. After they collided the driver stopped and cooperated with police.
The girl was wearing a helmet and appears to have been a prudent rider.
“She was doing all those things, but this happened,” said Hart. “We don’t know what caused this crash.”
Bicycle Collisions and Wrongful Death Liability
The Redwood City Police Department will surely look at speed and other factors to determine why this accident occurred, and whether the truck driver could have done anything to avoid the collision. While this accident remains under investigation, the parents of the young girl fatally injured in this collision would be well-advised to speak with an experienced and knowledgeable bicycle accident lawyer. An attorney who understands the unique legal issues of car vs. bicycle accidents can review the report and determine who is responsible for this collision. If the driver of the vehicle is determined to be responsible, he may be liable for the young victim’s medical care expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages.

Arcadia teen struck by car while riding bike dies
A 16-year-old Arcadia boy who was struck by a car while riding his bicycle over the weekend has died from his injuries, authorities said Wednesday.
Roger A. Lewis, who had been on life support following Saturday’s collision at Santa Anita Avenue and Duarte Road, died Tuesday at a hospital, Los Angeles County Department of Coroner Assistant Chief of Operations Ed Winter said.
The crash took place just before 10 p.m., Arcadia police officials said in a written statement.
The 2008 Chrysler Sebring struck the teenage cyclist, who was thrown from his bicycle, police said. Lewis, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered major head injuries.
He was pronounced dead at 9:53 a.m. Tuesday, Winter said. An autopsy was pending.
Lewis had been riding a Bianchi “fixed-gear” bicycle, police said.
The type of bicycle was originally developed for velodrome racing but has grown in popularity among recreational riders in recent years.
Lewis was a former student at Arcadia High School, where he studied for a little more than a year before transferring more than a year ago, Arcadia High School Principal Brent Forsee said.
“We’re very aware that even though he wasn’t a current student, he did have friends on campus,” the principal said. “He was a member of the community.”
Forsee said he wasn’t sure whether Lewis had been attending another school or was being home schooled.
Grief counselors and psychologists had been made available to AHS students, “just to counsel them, to be there,” Forsee said Wednesday.
He expressed sorrow for Lewis’ family and said as a result of the incident, school staff would be taking time to talk with students about helmets and bicycle safety.
The crash remained under investigation, however no crime was initially suspected, police said. Though toxicology results for both Lewis and the 26-year-old Arcadia man who was driving the involved car were pending, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol did not appear to be a factor, authorities said.
“The department sends its condolences to the family and friends of the bicyclist, as well as to the driver and witnesses to the collision,” Le Veque said.

Bicyclist killed on Country Club Drive in Bermuda Dunes
BERMUDA DUNES — A 44-year-old La Quinta man was killed Saturday after being struck by a vehicle near Country Club Drive and Jefferson Street in Bermuda Dunes.
Mark E. Ledbetter, 44, and Chad M. Priest, 29, were riding side-by-side about 7 a.m. Saturday westbound in the 79-900 block of Country Club Drive.
The dividing line that marks the shoulder was between them, CHP Officer Joseph Zagorski said. Ledbetter was on the left.
A Dodge Caliber was headed in the same direction when driver Anthony Peraza crashed into them just west of Avenue 42, Zagorski said.
The front of the driver’s side hit the back of Ledbetter’s bike, and the passenger-side mirror hit Priest. Both men flew off their bikes and landed on the road.
Peraza pulled over to the right shoulder to help the men, Zagorski said.
Ledbetter died about 30 minutes later at the scene, according to the Riverside County coroner.
Priest had bruises and cuts on his left arm and shoulder. The Indio man was treated at the scene.
There is no bike lane on that stretch of road, but bicyclists have the right-of-way, the CHP officer said.
“For some reason, he failed to avoid the bicyclists,” Zagorski said. “He’s responsible to avoid them, and he didn’t.”
It is unknown how fast Peraza, 32, of Coachella, was driving. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Bicyclist hit by pickup dies
A 46-year-old Lake Elsinore man was killed Wednesday, Aug. 1, when he was struck by a pickup while riding his bicycle in the unincorporated Lakeland Village area, authorities said.
Coroner’s officials identified the man as Harry Dettloff. He died at the scene.
California Highway Patrol officials said Dettloff was riding south on the west shoulder of Grand Avenue north of Baldwin Boulevard shortly after 4:30 p.m. when he was hit.
Patrick Wattson, 60, of Wildomar, was driving a Nissan Frontier south on Grand at about 40 mph when he drifted onto the right shoulder and hit Dettloff, said Officer Nathan Baer, a spokesman for the Temecula-area CHP office. Dettloff, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown to the pavement, Baer said.
Baer said it appears that the driver allowed the truck to drift because he was “momentarily inattentive.”

Cyclist Killed on Campbell Avenue Identified
A Cupertino man who was struck by a car while riding his bicycle in Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cyclist was identified as Charles Shaffer of Cupertino.
Around 6:25 p.m. on Thursday Campbell police say Shaffer was attempting to cross four-lane Campbell Avenue east of La Pradera Drive in front of the Kirkwood Plaza Shopping Center.
A Buick sedan traveling east, driven by an unidentified 28-year-old man, struck Shaffer.
Traffic was diverted for a time after the collision.
There is no indication the car was traveling at excessive speed, according to Campbell Police Capt. Charley Adams.
The driver remained at the scene and Adams said he has been “very cooperative” with the investigation. He submitted to a voluntary substance test and police do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
Officers responded to a report of a traffic collision between a cyclist and a car, Adams said. Upon arrival, officers found Shaffer in the center of Campbell Avenue.
“Emergency personnel attempted to revive (him) but were unsuccessful,” Adams said. “He was pronounced dead at the scene.”
The car is still being processed and witness accounts are being vetted, police said.

Child dies after Fresno crash; Central High coach faces DUI, manslaughter charges
Central High School’s boys varsity basketball coach faces a charge of vehicular manslaughter after a child struck in a northwest Fresno crash Wednesday night died, police say.
The 7-year-old child was one of three family members riding bicycles in a crosswalk across Shepherd Avenue when they were struck by a car driven by Loren LeBeau, 42, police said.
Police said LeBeau left the accident scene but later returned and identified himself. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Lt. Mike Doyle said.
Doyle said a father and his 2-year-old daughter were on one bicycle and the 7-year-old boy on another when they were hit as they rode the Fresno-Clovis Rail Trail across Shepherd Avenue just after 9 p.m.
The boy, identified by the Fresno County coroner as Donovan Maldonado, was dragged a couple hundred yards down westbound Shepherd Avenue, Doyle said.
The boy was taken either to Community Regional or Children’s Hospital Central California and was initially listed in very critical condition.
The father and daughter were taken to Community Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Doyle said. They were not identified.
Doyle said the family was in a group that included four others — including the children’s mother — who were walking the trail. A street light at that crossing was not working Wednesday night.
Police were trying to determine Wednesday night how fast the driver was going, and whether his headlights were on at the time of the crash.
Although Doyle could not confirm LeBeau was Central High’s coach, a player contacted Wednesday night who saw television footage of the driver confirmed he was the school’s coach.
LeBeau has been Central High’s varsity basketball coach for 10 seasons, including the past five years.
In between his two stints as Central’s coach, LeBeau served as an assistant coach at Pepperdine and Fresno City.
