Fatal morning wreck on PCH in Malibu closes highway for hours

A preliminary investigation into a head-on crash that on Saturday killed one person, injured three others and forced the closure of Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu suggests that a blown tire may have started the deadly chain of events, officials said.

The 19-year-old driver of a red Ford Explorer told investigators he lost control of the sport-utility vehicle after his right rear tire blew out, according to Det. Richard Curry with Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The SUV crossed over into oncoming traffic where it crashed head on into a black Toyota 4Runner, which then spun out and collided with a Lexus.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Anthony Arnold said the dead person was a juvenile who had been a passenger in the Ford Explorer. Investigators said the victim and driver had been partying in the area the night before. It was not immediately known whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, but investigators said they are looking into the possibility.

The crash was at 8:10 a.m. Saturday in an S-curve just east of the Los Angeles County fire battalion headquarters at Carbon Canyon Road. The vehicles came to rest at the western-most intersection of PCH and Rambla Pacifica, which intersects PCH twice .

PCH was reopened around 4 p.m. Saturday, several hours after the crash, according to California Highway Patrol officials. The area was cordoned off for the death investigation and to clear wreckage from the road.

There are no other roads along that section of the Malibu coast, which caused massive traffic snarls.

Resident Karen Horner said she was driving back to her home along PCH when she hit the traffic.

Authorities, Horner said, told her to park her car and walk home.

A SigAlert for the area was declared, but has since been lifted.

San Bernardino Mountains: Runaway rig hits car, crash kills 2

A truck driver jumped or fell to his death along a mountain highway, leaving a runaway rig to jackknife across an entire road until it crushed an oncoming car, killing that driver and injuring the passenger, investigators say.

A mechanical inspection will be conducted on the three-axle flatbed truck to determine whether its brakes failed prior to the wreck, which closed Highway 330 between Highland and the mountaintop town of Running Springs from about 2:30 p.m. until well beyond sunset Monday, Oct. 22.

“We have no witnesses who saw the collision, so it’s undetermined whether he was ejected … or otherwise,” California Highway Patrol Officer Gary Fernandez said.

Killed were the drivers of the truck and a white 2005 Acura RL.

The car’s passenger — a 58-year-old woman — was taken to a hospital for treatment of chest and left leg pain and scrapes to her right hand, Fernandez said.

Both occupants of the car are from the Big Bear area, but none of the three victims’ names have been released.

“He’s a real nice guy. He was the life of the crew,” concrete company official Art Rodriguez said of the truck driver, whom he said was married and the father of four children. “Very easy going. He always offered (his assistance) if anybody needed help.”

The driver was part of a five-man crew that had been returning from a Big Bear-area jobsite to the Monrovia headquarters of Cell-crete Specialty Concrete Contractors, said Rodriguez, the firm’s safety director.

The crew’s other four workers were following in a pickup well behind the flatbed truck, which was pulling a trailer loaded with a Bobcat earthmover and a forklift. The pickup wasn’t involved in the accident.

The wreck began on a straight stretch of Highway 330 when the truck left the road and climbed a hillside, then veered back onto the highway, said Fernandez, the CHP officer.

Soon after that, the truck driver flew out of the cab and died where he fell. But the truck rolled on for about another 150 feet.

“We now have a driverless truck continuing (downhill and veering) into the up-bound lane,” Fernandez said. “It’s jackknifing and is across both lanes. The Acura had nowhere to go and drove under the flatbed truck.”

Fire crews had to cut the couple free of the car’s wreckage.

Victims of Temecula Fatal Identified as Seniors

Two people who died at the scene of a fatal crash in Temecula were identified as senior citizens from Yorba Linda.

Amar Jain, 74, and Cheryl Jain, 66, were both pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s office.

Amar Jain was the driver and was trapped in the sedan; he was pronounced dead at 3:18 p.m.

Cheryl Jain was the passenger in the car; she was pronounced dead at 3:22 p.m.

Authorities have determined that a Temecula man ran a red light and killed an elderly couple Saturday.

Deputies determined that a Hyundai sedan broadsided a Honda CRV as the Honda made a left- turn onto eastbound Rancho California Road from Jefferson Avenue, Riverside County Sheriff’s Sgt. John Magnan said.

Amar Jain, 74, and Cheryl Jain, 66, both of Yorba Linda, died at the scene, the sergeant said.

The driver of the Hyundai, Christopher Bostic, was heading west on Rancho California Road when he entered the intersection “against a red light,” Magnan said in a statement.

Bostic was taken to an area hospital for unspecified major injuries.

It’s too early to say whether alcohol played a role in the crash, Magnan said, as that part of the investigation was ongoing.

Traffic was snarled for more than five hours following the 3:03 p.m. Saturday collision.

San Jose families mourn Highway 152 crash deaths resulting in DUI arrest

Relatives are preparing to lay two San Jose women to rest after authorities say they were killed in a car crash near Los Banos last week at the hands of a San Jose man driving against traffic while on drugs.

Alicia Carranza, 40, and 30-year-old Sara Castro Chiti were passengers in a Ford F-150 pickup on eastbound Highway 152 approaching Interstate 5 in the early-morning hours of Oct. 9 when the truck was hit head-on by a Ford Explorer going the wrong way, according to the California Highway Patrol and Merced County Sheriff’s Office.

Chiti was pronounced dead at the scene. Carranza was airlifted to a Modesto hospital, where she died. Another passenger in the pickup, 23-year-old San Jose resident Maria Can, was hospitalized with major injuries. The pickup driver, 23-year-old Victor Manual Herrera of San Jose, suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the wrong-way Ford Explorer, 68-year-old San Jose resident Ali Farsad, suffered minor injuries and was soon arrested on suspicion of multiple counts of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of illegal drugs. He is being held in Merced County Jail on $304,404 bail. It was not immediately clear what drugs Farsad was allegedly using.

Friends and relatives said the four people in the F-150 were headed to Los Angeles for janitorial jobs there when the crash occurred.

Chiti emigrated from the small Guatemalan town of Totonicapán seven years ago, and other than brother Govany Castro and sister-in-law, her family still lives there. Castro remembered his sister, who once cleaned houses in SanJose before getting her current job in Southern California, as a social person who doted over his 2-year-old son.

“She was friendly, outgoing and had a lot of friends,” Castro said. “And she totally loved my son.”

Carranza was a friend and co-worker of Chiti; her family could not immediately be reached. Can is Govany Castro’s sister-in-law.

A funeral Mass for the two women is tentatively planned for Thursday morning at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on San Antonio and Jackson streets in San Jose.

Adelanto woman killed in freeway crash

An 18-year-old Adelanto woman was killed late Friday night after the vehicle she was riding in lost control on the Palmdale Road on- ramp to southbound Interstate 15, was struck by an oncoming pickup truck, then both were hit by a tractor-trailer, California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino County Coroner’s officials said.

The woman, identified by the coroner’s office as Alejandra Gomez, was a passenger in a 2004 Silver Toyota Corolla. Just before 10 p.m. the driver attempted to merge onto the southbound 15 freeway by the Palmdale Road on-ramp. The driver lost control, was struck by the truck which pushed the Corolla onto the freeway and in the path of oncoming traffic, according to reports.

One minute after CHP dispatch received the call of the initial crash, several calls came in reporting a southbound tractor-trailer had struck both the Corolla and the truck.

Paramedics arrived and Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:00 PM. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

While authorities have identified the 18-year-old as Alejandra Gomez, her friends say she is known as Alejandra “Ally” Mendoza.

Friends and family took to the teen’s Facebook page to offer prayers to the family and to voice their disbelief over her sudden death.

Collisions such as this one can have countless causes, including unsafe passing maneuvers, swerving to avoid an object in the road, falling asleep at the wheel, driving under the influence, or driver distraction.
