Substitute teacher arrested on suspicion of molestation

A substitute teacher at Los Coyotes Middle School in La Mirada was arrested Monday on suspicion that he molested a female student in a classroom.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Dan Scott of the department’s Special Victims Unit said the mother of a female student reported to Norwalk sheriff’s station deputies Thursday that her daughter told her a male substitute teacher, Ted Nishihara, had touched her in a sexual manner during class. Scott said the girl is a preteen.

On Monday, detectives went to the school and interviewed students, staff members and others. Investigators then contacted Nishihara at his home.

Scott said that after interviewing Nishihara, detectives arrested him on suspicion of lewd acts upon a child. He was booked at the Cerritos sheriff’s station. His bail is set at $200,000.

According to Nishihara’s resume, he graduated in 2006 with a bachelor of arts in psychology. He has previously worked at the ABC Unified School District in Cerritos and Garden Grove Unified as a substitute teacher. He has also worked for Long Beach Unified as an instructional aide.

Clovis Unified Fires Teacher Accused of Molestation

Clovis Unified has fired a teacher accused of molesting a child. It comes over month after a second grade teacher was arrested and charged with child pornography and sexual abuse.
Clovis School Board President says, “We have sought the truth, however painful because the truth is what will help us to heal.”
Heal after shocking allegations came forward at Freedom Elementary. 44-year-old Neng Yang is accused of using his power as teacher to take advantage of a second grade girl.
He was arrested back in January and has since pleaded not guilty to child pornography and 45 counts of sexual abuse.
On Monday, the Clovis Unified School Board met behind closed doors to vote on whether Yang should have a job.
The closed session meeting took under five minutes before Van Volkinburg announced the decision. He says, “Our action today brings closure to employment of the individual at the center of recent disturbing events in our district.”
By law, Clovis Unified had to wait 30 days. The time allowed Yang a chance to defend himself. School officials say that day has come and gone.
In a court room, Yang is still innocent until proven guilty, but school officials say there was enough evidence to take action now before a ruling is made.
Yang is behind bars at the Fresno County Jail. His bail is set at $4.5 million. He’s due in Federal Court on April 9th.

Physician’s Assistant Charged With Child Molestation

FBI agents arrested a San Diego man accused of taking pictures and video with young naked girls.
He worked as a physician’s assistant at the Naval Medical Center in Balboa Park

“It’s tragic, repulsive, and I think would make most people sick to their stomach,” FBI Spokesperson April Langwell said.

Federal agents say 38-year-old Brandon Schroth is seen in digital files touching minors.

“They’re staged on a mattress in a bed.  There were video depictions of him in a bathtub naked with two pre-pubescent girls,” Langwell said. “Very young 8 to 9 year-old girls.  There is no doubt they are engaging in child pornography.”

Schroth worked as a physician’s assistant at the Naval Medical Center in Balboa Park.

Rica Kennedy lived next door to Schroth for a year and a half, until he moved out of the Mission Valley apartment last month.

“I was shocked because he’s in the military and I think he works at the hospital.  I hope he’s not…I’m just shocked,” Kennedy said. “That’s scary.  Especially here at this complex, there are a lot of kids here.”

Schroth is being charged with two counts of child sex exploitation. His detention hearing is set for March 8.

Miramonte coach arrested on suspicion of sex with student

A migrant community specialist and coach for Miramonte High School was arrested Friday on suspicion of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, police said.

Bakersfield police reported the investigation into Saul Noe Lopez, 31, began when a local merchant reported that a school employee operating a Kern High School District van had purchased condoms at his store.

Kern High School District police identified Lopez as the man who bought the condoms, Bakersfield police reported. A 16-year-old student was identified as the alleged victim.

The investigation was then handed over to Bakersfield police because of the nature of the alleged crime.

Bakersfield police determined Lopez had transported the student from the campus to his home, where a sex act took place, according to police.

Lopez was booked into the downtown jail Friday evening.

No other students have been identified as victims, police said.

KHSD spokesman John Teves said Lopez, who had worked at Miramonte since the school’s opening in 2008, resigned Friday. Lopez was coach of the girls’ varsity soccer team.

As a migrant community specialist, Lopez worked as a liaison between the school and local migrant families, Teves said. It is not a credentialed position.

Teacher’s aide reportedly from San Pedro hit with 4 sex charges

A teacher’s aide from Fremont High School in South Los Angeles was charged today with four felony sex-related counts.

Alain Salas, 40, was scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon in Compton Superior Court on three counts of committing a lewd act on a child and one count of contact with a minor for a sexual offense, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

According to his Facebook site, Salas is from San Pedro and lives there. The FBI says Salas lists a Los Angeles street address as his residency.

The criminal complaint alleges that the crimes occurred last year between Oct. 1 and Nov. 30 and involved a 15-year-old girl identified only as “Jane Doe.”

Salas began working at Fremont in 2006 as a teacher’s aide for special education students, and also helped coach girls softball and volleyball, according to the Los Angeles Unified School District.

He was arrested Monday by members of the FBI’s Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement team.

“The SAFE team is working with the alleged victim’s family and the school district, and is continuing to investigate the nature and extent of the allegations,” said FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller.

Prosecutors were asking that Salas’ bail be set at $300,000.

Third-Grade Teacher At Telfair Elementary Jailed On Child Sex Abuse Charges

A former third-grade teacher at a Pacoima elementary school has been jailed on sexual abuse charges.

Paul Chapel, 50, was arrested in October and is being held on a $2.2 million bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles.

The Telfair Elementary School teacher been charged with 16 criminal counts including charges of sexual abuse and lewd acts on a child involving three girls and one boy, all under the age of 14, the Daily News reports.

The crimes in questions were allegedly committed between September 2010 and April 2011, according to the News.

It is unclear if the crimes occurred on the Telfair campus.

The Los Angeles Police Department is not releasing Chapel’s mug shot as their investigation in ongoing.

Chapel, of Chatsworth, is on unpaid leave from the Los Angeles Unified School District. His teaching credentials were suspended coinciding with his October arrest, the paper reports.

A court hearing for Chapel has been scheduled for Feb. 15. If convicted, he faces between 15 years and life in prison.

Chapel’s arrest is the fourth sex crimes-related arrest in recent weeks of an LAUSD employee.

Mark Berndt, 61, was arrested on Jan. 30 after hundreds of photos surfaced of Miramonte Elementary School students bound, gagged and blindfolded in his classroom between 2008 and 2010. Some photos showed cockroaches being placed on the students’ faces, others are being fed a milky-white substance on a spoon or cookie. The third-grade teacher and 30-year LAUSD veteran faces 23 counts of lewd acts on a child and is being held on $23 million bail.

Fellow Miramonte Elementary teacher Martin Springer, 49, was arrested Feb. 3 on charges of lewd acts on a child. The second-grade teacher has pleaded not guilty to fondling allegations involving a former female student. He is free on $300,000 bond.

Paul Adame, 37, a janitor at Germaine Elementary School in Chatsworth, was arrested Monday after a student’s mother said he had inappropriate contact with her son.

Despite the recent arrest of four LAUSD employees, Superintendent John Deasy believes the district does not need to change their hiring practices.

“We screen teachers. Every single teacher is in the state and national data base for fingerprints. I think the thing you have to know that is in order to be tracked of course, you have to have done something that is on your record,” Deasy said.

The district is considering adding a psychological profile evaluation to the hiring process.

For more than 20 years, trial lawyer Gary A. Kessler has represented children and adolescents sexually abused and molested by trusted authority figures. Our law firm has the resources and the professional will to thoroughly investigate, prepare, and present sexual abuse and molestation cases. We take systematic depositions from the victim and his or her psychotherapist, from psychiatric child sex abuse experts, from any witnesses, and from the perpetrator’s supervisors and organizational leaders. We seek to reveal all relevant facts and evidence, to establish psychological harm, and to demonstrate fault within the organization where appropriate.

No monetary amount can compensate for the damage that child sexual abuse causes. However, damage awards can be powerful financial incentives for schools, churches, and other organizations to screen and monitor their employees who regularly interact with children and teenagers. Adequate financial compensation can also defray the cost of long term psychotherapy and psychiatric care.

Throughout our personal injury practice, we devote our full personal attention to every case that we accept. We believe that effective representation in child sex abuse cases requires not only exceptional legal skill, but the ability to respond to psychologically damaged children and outraged parents. If you or a loved one has been sexually abused by a person in authority, please contact the Law Offices of Gary A Kessler today.

Jury awards $1M to teens in ‘choking game’ lawsuit

A Clarendon County jury awarded a $1 million verdict Thursday to the families of two boys allegedly forced to play “the choking game” with a volunteer counselor at Clemson University’s Camp Bob Cooper in 2008.

Ronald Edward “Eddie” Riley, then 17, served as a junior counselor to boys ages 12 and younger at the camp on Lake Marion in Summerton. He outweighed each of the campers by at least 100 pounds, according to court records.

Riley grabbed the boys and attempted to choke or successfully choked four of them, arrest reports say.

The so-called “choking game” causes a brief high but comes with the risk of serious injury or death.

The criminal case against Riley, now 21, remains open.

The civil trial that ended Thursday accused the federal program, Operation: Military Kid, Clemson and its Youth Learning Institute and Camp Bob Cooper, of negligence. The verdict awards $500,000 to each boy’s family.

Both military families lived in Summerville at the time of the incident but both have been restationed in other cities since then. Their lawyer, David Savage of Charleston, said the camp placed Riley in charge of young boys without training or supervision.

“He made a MySpace page of himself holding a knife up to his lips saying, ‘Be quiet. This is going to hurt.’ That’s how he advertised himself,” Savage said. “They did no background check on him.”

Clemson University spokeswoman Cathy Sams said Camp Bob Cooper has implemented standards for camper supervision in the years since the incident. She criticized the jury’s decision Thursday.

“We believe the award is excessive, is not supported by the facts in the case, and we will appeal,” Sams said.

Sams said the 2008 incident marked the first of its kind in Camp Bob Cooper’s 50-year history.

The Centers for Disease Control said in 2008 that 82 children had died from the “choking game,” a fad popular for the euphoric, dreamlike feeling caused as blood rushes back to the brain.
