Bicyclist injured in Fillmore crash dies

An 81-year-old bicyclist who was seriously injured in a Fillmore crash Wednesday died at the hospital, authorities said Thursday.Guadalupe Cruz, of Fillmore, was riding his bicycle south on C Street about 8:30 a.m. A tractor-trailer struck him as he entered the intersection with Ventura Street and was knocked to the ground, authorities said.

Cruz was treated at the scene and taken to Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura, where he died, said Michael Tellez, a deputy Ventura County medical examiner.

An autopsy will not be done because Cruz clearly died of the injuries he suffered in the crash, Tellez said.

Cause of the Fillmore Crash

Victor Leija, 40, of Bakersfield, was driving a tractor-trailer west on Ventura Street when he stopped at a red light, authorities said. As the light turned green, Leija continued into the intersection as Cruz rode in front of him according to witnesses statements.  While it is uncertain whether excessive speed, driver negligence, distracted and unsafe driving caused or contributed to this tragic accident, the victim’s family would be well-advised to contact an experienced personal injury lawyer.  An experienced and knowledgeable lawyer can advise the victim’s  family of their legal rights and best course of action to recover the compensation he is entitled to for medical care expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, or other related damages in this terrible  accident.

Drugs and alcohol were not a factor and Leija was cooperative during the investigation, said Capt. Monica McGrath of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office’s Fillmore station.
