Sober Rides Available For New Year’s Eve

Law enforcement will be out in full force for the holiday weekend, so if you find that you’ve had too much to drink, there are a few options to help get you home safely.

For the 15th year, the Auto Club of Southern California will offer its free Tipsy Tow service again for the holiday weekend. From 6 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Sunday, you can call 800-400-4-AAA and the Auto Club will give you a free tow home of up to seven miles.

But AAA said there are some rules you need to follow: the ride is only available to the driver, no passengers can be included. And it’s a first-come, first-serve basis, you can’t call and make a reservation. The Auto Club said the program should be used as a last resort, and everyone should be planning to designate a sober driver early. They also said to bring your patience, because the two truck drivers will be very busy.

Law enforcement officials are encouraging anyone who sees a drunk driver out on the roads to call 911. Also, they warn that it’s not worth it to get behind the wheel if you’ve had a few drinks, because they’ll be out in force looking for impaired drivers. Officials report their holiday crackdown so far has been successful. Officers say they want to keep it that way, and make it through the holiday without a traffic-related death.
